Better SteeringAmong the baubles buried in the Competiton Package at $8,000 plus. fine print, you'll find what BMW officially calls a "recalibration" of the rack-and-pinion steering. In particular,BMW engineers were after more sensitivity during very heavy cornering. And I'd say they nailed it, with some qualification. I tested the M6 with severaltriple-digit sprints through a 90-degree country lane apex. I threw every setting into Sport Plus mode and clicked DSC to M Dynamic Mode, which leads toless intervention. On these blasts steering feel was more precise, better weighted, and more cleanly calibrated. I tried a similar set of blasts in the M5two days earlier, and at 90-110 mph, likewise, found similar results.In both cars, Sport Plus adds a great deal of effort as well. It's too heavy for everyday driving, so you're bound to opt for Sport or even Comfort modes,and there you loose the sensitivity you're after. Naturally this leads to the head-scratcher—can't they increase feel without making effort so directlyrace-focused? The additional 45 HP, and 25 lb/feet knocks 2/10 of the 60MPH already unreal time. The throttle calibration with this pkg makes it feel more like 650HP."BMW"After chatting up one engineer on this subject, who veiled his answer with many qualifications, the simple answer is yes. It's also clear that BMW hasheard this critique before, and that you'll see future changes, too.Or, to put it bluntly, BMW, like other automakers, is starting to see a market for incremental and very subjective tweaks. That may be heartless, but it's no different (and far more substantive) than paying extra for a giant wing thatdoesn't do anything but rack up points on your insurance.Lower, and StifferIn addition to the tauter steering, the C.P. drops both cars by 10 mm, and both also adds a stiffer suspension: shocks, springs, stabilizer bars, and frontaxle bushings are all stiffer. The interesting effect here is that the M5 managed to feel relaxed even in Sport Plus mode on country lanes as well as statefour-laners, but the M6 rode a little more harshly. The M6 still had a decidedly sports-car rather than GT character once backed off to Comfort mode, andmore road noise seemed to penetrate the cabin. There's an easy explanation: The 5er has fully framed doors, while the M6 goes with rimless glass windows,which are much harder to seal for sound. The exhaust manifold is compact yet sophisticated. Note the turbos are twin-scroll. An illustration to the connection of exhaust manifolds: Cylinder 1 and 6 are connected to one of the scrolls of the first twin-scroll turbocharger. Another scroll connects to Cylinder 4 and 7. Cylinder 2 and 8 are connected to one of the scrolls of the second twin-scroll turbocharger. Another scroll connects to Cylinder 3 and 5. As you can see, each turbo is supplied by both cylinder banks, unlike conventional twin-turbo. This explains why we call it cross-bank turbocharging. It is also why the exhaust manifolds and turbochargers have to be located inside the valley. If they were mounted outside the engine, the cross-bank exhaust manifolds would have to be too long and cumbersome, adding considerable weight and turbo lag. Now we can use the same principles learned from the previous section of Twin-scroll turbo to analyse the engine. If you have not read that section, please read it first. The firing order of a typical V8 engine is 1 - 5 - 4 - 8 - 6 - 3 - 7 - 2. If we combine the exhaust gas of all cylinders together, we will get a pulse train as below. It shows a lot of interference. Each pulse is partly offset by the negative tails of the preceding pulses. This reduces the strength of the Undoubtedly, the most unique feature of the 4.4L TT is the packaging of the turbochargers in the valley between the cylinder banks. This is made possible by the swapping of the intake and exhaust ports in the cylinder heads, with the exhaust now exiting towards the middle. This allows the turbochargers to be mounted in the valley with minimal plumbing, which means less bulk, lower weight and better efficiency. Immediately after exiting the turbochargers, the exhaust gases enter the catalysts. It's important to keep the cats as close as possible, as the exhaust carries heat that is required for the converters' operation. Packaging the cats in this location underneath the hood must present some interesting insulation challenges!Instead of expensive variable-vane technology, each turbo makes use of fixed geometry and relatively simple wastegates. Each compressor is fed via a black oval-shaped duct, as shown above. Between the compressor outlet and the intake manifolds lie a pair of air-to-water intercoolers, one for each bank. Such an intercooler reduces packaging volume and tract length compared to a top- or front-mounted air-to-air heat exchanger.Immediately downstream of the intercoolers lie a pair of electronically-controlled throttle bodies. Below each centrally-located coil-on-plug (COP) assembly resides the direct injector, along with the feed lines and fuel rail. It's presumed thatpiezoelectric injectors are employed here, which are fast enough to allow several injection events per combustion cycle. Each fuel rail gets its own fuel-pressure regulator. The operating system of this system is yet unknown, but we're guessing that it's similar to the 200 bar (3000 PSI) that is used in the engine's direct-injection predecessors.
